So what do you do after the fire is over?

I called my insurance company at 4am that day, when I got home from the fire. They immediately contacted an adjuster who works for "me" and the insurance company. I put me in quotes because in essence, they work for the insurance company but help facilitate the claim. When I showed up the next day, contractors were already at the scene. They are the ambulance chasers of fires. Also public adjusters show up too. I will explain more about that in my next blog. The insurance company will want you to board up. So I just told one company to do that. That was a mistake, which I will explain later. Also the next mistake was just getting a company to winterize. As it was winter and freezing temperatures would lead to broken pipes, winterizing the pipes and boilers must be done. Now to deal with the building inspector and the fire marshal. Also time to deal with the tenants!!

It is a big ordeal, and the most important thing to do is document, take pictures, and stay on top of the workers!

Next blog will discuss how to deal with the tenants, if you are a landlord.

Here is a video of the fire:

Thank goodness you were able to recover so quickly (relatively, anyway). I can only imagine how awful that must have been to go thru, Seth. I'm curious, how did the fire start?

The fire started from a smoker!! Left a cigar burning on the porch, the spot in the video that is blazing!
